A day full of valuable experiences: Our social day at Sunnahof
As part of our Navi training, we had the opportunity to spend a social day at Sunnahof, a subsidiary of Lebenshilfe Vorarlberg. The three of us were divided between the different areas of agriculture, gardening and the farm catering/shop on the organic farm and were able to spend a day helping out.
The focus was on working together, learning from each other and completing tasks. The most impressive thing for us was definitely to see the joy that the people in our care took in their work. Their diligence and ambition were infectious and secretly exemplary for our everyday life at the bank.😉
Our tasks were varied: we mucked out stables, checked pastures and pulled weeds. In the kitchen and service, we helped prepare cold cuts, bake cookies and grissinis and, of course, wash up. In the garden centre, we repotted seedlings we had grown ourselves, labelled them and then transported them to the greenhouse for sale
Regardless of which area we worked in, it was particularly important to talk to people while we were working. We gained an insight into the activities that people with disabilities perform and how their everyday lives can be organised with the help of their carers so that they can develop as independently as possible.
We saw how they are encouraged and proud of themselves, how much enthusiasm they have for working together and living together.
We particularly liked the fact that people with and without disabilities live together in an uncomplicated, unbiased way through sales, catering and encounters on the farm. We were deeply impressed by the direct, unfiltered manner of the people with disabilities and their joy in small successes. They feel needed and do their best.
This social day showed us how valuable and enriching working with people with disabilities is and how much we can learn from them. They are professionals at being patient, adapting to their counterparts, helping each other and giving feedback or sometimes remaining stubborn. These are qualities that we take to heart and that can also help us in our day-to-day work. The experiences we had with the staff at Sunnahof will stay with us for a long time to come.
