Cooking Together, Helping Together

“Aprons on!” was the motto for a small group from Recruiting on July 23 as they joined the Samariter Suppentopf initiative. Under the guidance of the head chef, the team worked together to prepare lunch for the guests of the social market in Vienna's 12th district.

The menu featured ham pasta casserole (Schinkenfleckerl) and spinach dumplings with a creamy mushroom sauce. To make it happen, onions were peeled (not without a few tears), ham was chopped, what felt like 200 spinach dumplings were shaped by hand, and the mushroom cream sauce was stirred in an enormous pot. It quickly became clear just how much food is prepared here every day and how much teamwork goes into making it all possible.

After cooking, the group headed to the social market, where they helped serve the meals. What stood out most was the welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to connect directly with the guests. The personal encounters and conversations are what will stay with us the longest.

It was a rewarding day that showed how fulfilling it can be to work together for a meaningful cause and to get involved in social initiatives beyond everyday working life.
