Help for the JE_TZT Employment Project
In spring 2009, I was able to work on the JE_TZT employment project - a co-operation between Caritas and Volkshilfe - which aims to (re)integrate young adults into working life. The social welfare office nominates clients and introduces them to the world of work during two-month internships. The aim is to find permanent employment with the organisation offering the internship.
My motivation to take part in the programme resulted from a general interest in social issues - combined with a need for solidarity with people who find themselves in emergency situations. My role as a paramedic as part of my military service and temporary voluntary work as a paramedic with the Red Cross also fit in with this.
My expectations were absolutely fulfilled - my key learnings:
- Social workers make very tough decisions with serious consequences for their clients
- Social organisations are just as competitive and under pressure to succeed as private companies
- People in need are usually not "to blame" for their situation - and if they are, they still have a right to help (this was already my approach before - but it was greatly strengthened)
- One chance is often not enough - people have a right to several chances.
