Building Hope Together: A Day with Obdach Wien
On 22th January, Erste Social Banking, Erste Finance and Time Bank colleagues had the privilege of spending the day at Obdach Wien in Kastanienallee. It was a Social Day+ filled with purpose, connection, and reflection.
The first half of the day was dedicated to learning about Obdach Wien - organisation that provides critical support to those experiencing homelessness. From day centers and emergency shelters to transitional housing and assisted living, their work touches thousands of lives each year. It was humbling to meet the people who not only work tirelessly to provide these services but also those who depend on them to rebuild their lives.
In the second half of the day, we rolled up our sleeves to give back in a small but tangible way. We painted walls and built garden beds (Pflanzen Hochbeete) – small changes, but ones that can brighten a space and make it feel a bit more like home. But the numbers we learned about during our visit stayed with us:
➡️ Nearly 20,000 people in Austria experience homelessness, with 11,340 in Vienna alone (Statistics Austria 2023).
➡️ Many cases go unreported – people staying in overcrowded spaces, living in precarious housing situations or unwilling to move from the streets.
➡️ Women are disproportionately affected by the barriers to stable housing, yet they’re often underrepresented in homelessness statistics and services.
Obdach Wien’s work is critical, and their move toward the Housing First approach – where housing is seen not as a reward but as a foundation for recovery – offers hope. Studies show that this model is especially impactful for women, providing the stability needed to regain independence.
For us, this day was a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the importance of showing up for those in need. We left with full hearts, dirty hands, and a renewed commitment to do our part. Together, we can build not just walls or garden beds, but bridges to a brighter future for everyone.
