Team day - Group volunteering in Vienna's Augarten
As an OE, we decided to carry out a joint volunteer activity in order to learn about other aspects of work and approaches as a team. On 7 May, nine of us went to the Augarten in Vienna, where we were given a guided tour and planted two fields.
The original plan was to plant one field. However, we were so motivated and worked so well together as a team that we were able to plant a second field as well. It was wonderful to see the results of our work with our own eyes. The praise from our supervisor also made us very proud.
Taking the time to look at the work we have done and be proud of it is something that is far too rare in our everyday working lives. But the day showed us how important it is to take this time.
The biggest lesson for us as a team was that we are a well-functioning team even outside of our familiar activities and don't need much coordination. A brief explanation from our supervisor about what needed to be done and a quick discussion within the team about who would do which parts was enough, and we were able to start work after just a few minutes. Throughout the day, everyone helped and supported each other as usual.
A refreshing change from our highly regulated everyday banking routine was the fact that we were repeatedly told not to be so precise about everything. As usual, we planned and measured the spacing between the plants in detail and calculated everything. It took us a while to come to terms with the idea of not being so precise and welcoming deviations.
For us, the day was simply fantastic and very exciting. We had a lot of fun together and afterwards we had a great feeling of having contributed something and really helped. It was a very nice feeling.
We will do group volunteering again next year and are already looking forward to the many great opportunities offered by the Time Bank.
